Well Child Office Visits
Keeping the well child well is one of the major goals of pediatrics. During a well-child visit, we are primarily concerned with observing growth and development, early detection of illness through screening and laboratory tests, immunizations, counseling and teaching parents, and getting to know one another. We recommend routine office visits as follows:
|
|
After the 2 year well-child visit, children are seen Once A Year For Well Care. The yearly visit also gives you a chance to ask questions about your child's physical development and behavior. It is your opportunity to ask questions and address any concerns that you may have. It helps to write questions down. Don't be afraid to ask questions about your child's progress even though these questions may seem trivial. MAKE SURE YOUR QUESTIONS ARE ANSWERED AND YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN TOLD. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE FULLY INFORMED ABOUT OUR FINDINGS AND OPINIONS.
Please call in advance to schedule well care visits.
Adolescent Appointments
Our providers enjoy guiding adolescents through the physical and emotional changes that make the transition to young adulthood such an exciting, rewarding, but often turbulent time. We will provide services through your college years. For more information on adolescence click here.
Our Laboratory
Elmwood Pediatric Group has a full-service laboratory at both locations that makes it possible for many of your child’s laboratory testing to be obtained in our office at the time of your visit. Our lab is CLIA credentialed by New York State Department of Health permitting us to perform a broad range of testing that includes CBC, Urinalysis, Lead testing, Rapid Strep testing, Mono testing, Blood Glucose, and HIV screening.
After Hours and Emergency Care
You can also visit Is Your Child Sick site which offers numerous topics on illness related matters.
A physician from our office is always on call when the office is closed. For after hour services please call our office numbers at (585) 244-9720 or (585) 381-3780. You will be connected to our answering service who will in turn relay your medical concerns to the pediatric nurse triage service. The triage service will take your message and follow-up with the physician on call.
If you are dealing with a life-threatening emergency, please call 911 for an ambulance or go directly to the closest emergency room. The emergency room physician will communicate with us so that we can coordinate your child’s care.
In case of ingestion of unusual substances, please call the poison control center at (800) 222-1222 immediately.
Electronic Medical Records
Elmwood Pediatrics utilizes an Electronic Medical Records system (EMR) to provide access to patient records and ensure continuity of care. Our EMR allows our providers and nurses to access patient records from each of our office locations, resulting in better patient care, improved clinical and administrative efficiencies, and enhanced patient education. In addition, our EMR allows instant transfer of prescriptions directly to a patient's pharmacy during office visits. School/sports participation forms may be faxed directly to your child’s school.
Mental Health
After an initial consultation to discuss the issues your child is dealing with, our providers will make a recommendation to either treat your child within our practice or refer him or her to a qualified specialist that can provide the best counseling and treatment. As with all specialist referrals, our providers will stay in communication with the specialists to provide for quality coordination of care for your child. If you would like to schedule a consultation with one of our providers to evaluate an emotional issue your child is facing, please call our Patient Care Line to make an appointment with one of our care coordinators. If you are ever concerned that the emotional issues your child is facing are severe enough to risk suicide or injury to self or others, please seek immediate medical attention at an emergency facility or call 911.

Immunizations
We firmly believe in the immunization policies and recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Center for Disease Control, and believe it is in the very best interest of all children to receive these immunizations on the recommended schedule. Parents who do not wish to vaccinate on the recommended schedule must schedule a separate immunization consultation appointment with one of our providers.
We participate in the New York State Immunization Registry program (NYSISS), which ensures that each patient's immunization history is part of the State's data base. All immunization data is automatically transferred to the registry unless the parent "opts out" of participating. This service provides our patients ready and rapid access to their immunization information. For more information regarding immunizations, visit our Health Library section or click here.
Lead Testing
Elmwood Pediatrics does routine blood lead level testing at our office lab for all 9 and 24 month well child care visits. Results are available to discuss at that day’s visit. In addition, we can provide blood lead level testing at other ages if a parent is concerned about their child and possible exposure to lead. Lead can be found in homes built before 1978, old paint, soil, older painted toys and antique furniture, and food stored in some ceramic dishes (especially if made in another country). Once lead enters the body, it travels through the bloodstream and is stored mainly in the bones where it can remain for a lifetime. Very high levels of lead in the body may cause many long-term problems, including: developmental delays, hearing loss, seizures and coma, kidney problems, anemia and growth problems. If you are concerned about possible lead exposure, please discuss with your provider.
Lactation Counseling
Elmwood Pediatrics offers lactation counseling appointments. In most cases, appointments with our lactation counselor are made by referral from one of our providers. However, nursing mothers with breastfeeding questions may also make an appointment by calling 585-244-9720. For more information regarding on breast feeding click here.
